If you drive a modern automatic (twist-n-go) scooter, then it is likely that your scooter has been restricted to prevent it from reaching its full power. This is typically done to keep the power and speed down so that the vehicle can be registered under scooter or moped classifications that many states have. This classification means many scooter drivers do not need license plates, special licenses, or expensive registrations.

However, how much fun is it to have a restricted vehicle? Not much. So if you’d like to get the full power out of your ride, you can remove the restrictions yourself, and enjoy a vehicle operating at its full potential.

This article deals with derestricting a 2004 Aprilia Mojito 50 (known as the Habana in Europe) and mentions specific differences with the technique for the Aprilia SR50 DiTech, since these two scooters share the same drivetrain. However, the derestriction techniques described here work on most modern automatic scooters, with some variation between brands and models. This document was originally written as a thread on the ApriliaForum by Scott (AKA Scootnfast) and all credit should go to him. He wrote the bulk of the document, and took the pictures. I am simply removing the info from the forum context, doing some editing for clarity and formatting, and putting it up for all to see (specifically Googlers).

How to de-restrict a scooter is one of the most common questions asked on the ApriliaForum and in emails to myself and others. Hopefully this article will give you what you need to get into that scooter, and de-restrict it.

Let me start by letting you know some basics…

  • If you tamper with the motor in any way to de-restrict it, some dealers will completely void your warranty. So make sure this is a sacrifice you are willing to make. If you mess up your scooter while wrenching it in your back yard, your dealer will help you out, but don’t expect too much sympathy.
  • De-restricting your scooter may cause it to violate your State or Country’s laws concerning the scooter or moped classification. For instance, in Missouri, if your scooter makes over 3 horsepower or goes over 30MPH, then it needs to be registered as a motorcycle, and the operator needs to have a current motorcycle endorsement on their license. Many people don’t bother to do this, since the vehicle still looks the same as it did, and enforcement is very rare, but you should be aware of your local laws, and you must accept responsibility for your actions if you decide to break any of them!
  • ALL bolts and socket head cap screws are in metric! Don’t try to work on your vehicle if you don’t have metric tools, you will just end up messing up the heads.
  • This article describes the technique for a 2004 Aprilia Mojito. Much of the drive-train is the same on the Aprilia SR50 DiTech, and is very similar on the other Aprilia models. If you have another model than the one described here, just go slow, and make sure to note differences between your setup and this one.
  • If your scooter is not an Aprilia, then this guide may still be of use. The Mojito uses the Morini engine, which means it shares many parts with other vehicles using the Morini, such as Suzuki Katana scooters. Also, while the engines are fairly different, most Minarelli engine scooters have a very similar setup in terms of restriction. This includes many Yamaha’s and Malaguti’s. Even Piaggio’s and modern Vespa’s have similar restrictions.

The Mojito has 4 restrictions on it. They include:

    1. A small washer in the variator.
    2. A jet restrictor in the carb.
  1. Two restrictors on the exhaust system, an inner flange restricting flow, and a resonator tube that impedes scavenging.

Most modern scooters have some combination (or all) of the above restrictions. To properly de-restrict a scooter, you must do all of the parts. If you only do half the job, you could actually damage the scooter. Ask your dealer, or other enthusiasts who own the same scooter as you, to find out exactly where your model is restricted.

The SR50 DiTech has only two restrictions, but one of them is different from most scooters. The washer in the variator is present (though it may not be on the ‘03 DiTechs I have heard?), but it also has a restriction in the ECU, the computer that controls the fuel injection. This restriction MUST be removed by a dealer, since only they have the equipment to reprogram the ECU. The equipment takes the form of a Gameboy cartridge that plugs into your scooter and into the Gameboy, giving the dealer the ability to update your software. Many dealers will do this for free, some may charge for the labor (should only take a few minutes, really). The exhaust isn’t restricted per-say, but it should be replaced for best performance, along with installing lighter roller weights. Of course, that costs a bit of money.

Results for de-restricting these vehicles are as follows:

    • Scott’s SR50 DiTech – Stock had decent acceleration, and a top speed of 40-45 MPH. After de-restricting (washer removal and re-mapping), I had a top end of 58 MPH, but had terrible acceleration, and a dead spot from 35-45 MPH. I put a Gianelli exhaust on, and a new Malossi Fly clutch. I used the 6.5 gram roller weights that came with the pipe, and I get 60MPH on level ground with great acceleration and no dead spot.
    • Sam’s SR50 DiTech – After de-restriction, and the fitting of a Gianelli NRX exhaust and a Malossi Fly clutch, top speed is about 60MPH on level surface, with consistent acceleration through the entire range. After having troubles with a dead spot that surfaced at around 35-40MPH, I lightened the weights from 6.5g to 6.0g and installed a new White contra spring, which removed the dead spot and returned acceleration to its prime. Basically identical results to those found by Scott.
  • Scott’s Mojito – Stock… Well it was a DOG!!! 30 MPH, 35 MPH downhill, with virtually no acceleration. After completing all 4 de-restrictions, a top speed of 47 MPH (verified), and really good acceleration… Everything else is still stock! The only thing I bought for it was a .8 mm jet ($10)!!! I have an Arrow Classic high performance exhaust for the Mojito also, but I recommend getting the Leo Vince pipe instead. With that on, I have even better acceleration, and a top end of about 52MPH flat out, and 55MPH down hill!!!

Just a few notes about working on your vehicle: Remember where every hose and cable you disconnect goes! This is very important. You might think you can remember each little screw and hose, but when it comes time to reassemble, its very easy to mistake a few hoses or screws and cause yourself a world of hurt. Do what I do. Make little drawings of everything as you go, and use little labels on pieces of tape to identify hoses and mark their locations. It sounds silly, but it will save you a lot of trouble, trust me!

Also, keep in mind that Scott and I are not mechanics, just interested scooter fanatics. When in doubt, take it to your dealer! However, now that all this prep work has been laid down, lets get into the de-restriction.

    Removing the Variator Washer

First start by removing the socket head cap screws to remove the transmission cover on the left side of the scooter. Be careful of the gasket, my mojito had a gasket, but my DiTech didn’t. Ignore the ‘remove kick start’ in the photo below. I am used to working on motorcycles, where the kick start is actually attached to the crank and you have to remove it to get the cover off. But on these scooters, you DO NOT have to remove the kick-start. In fact, you do not need to remove the kick-start on any scooters to my knowledge.

This is what you should have removed. Keep track of those screws and the gasket. If your scooter does not have a gasket there, don’t worry. The DiTech’s do not have one.

OK, now you should be looking at the whole drive train. As you face the open transmission, the variator is on the left, and the clutch is on the right. To remove the nut on the variator, you need an impact wrench. If you try to use a regular wrench on the nut, then you will just rotate the pulley around, and not get anything done. There are special tools that let you block the piston in place, or grip the variator to hold it still, but the best solution is an impact wrench! There are both electric models and pneumatic models available, for reasonable prices. Investing in an impact wrench will make your scooter maintenance live much easier. Try Harbor Freight Tools if you live in the US.

Removing the nut on the clutch is also best done with an impact wrench, though you can also have a helper hold the rear brake down while you undo the nut with a regular wrench.

Once you have the variator off, you will notice a washer located between the two halfs of the pulley. This is a restriction! That little washer does not let the two halves come completely together, which prevents the scooter from going into its highest gearing. For a good explanation of the transmission to help understand why that washer does what it does, read the article CVT Basics. Removing it makes a big difference in top speed.

While we have the variator off, I will show you where the roller weights are located, they are in the back of the variator. You have to remove three screws to get to them. I left the little stamped cover off when I re-assembled everything. It is not needed, and I have heard that it can sometimes impede the variator from reaching its highest ratio.

Once you have it apart, this is what it will look like. If you want to go to a different weight, this is when you do it! If you are de-restricting a DiTech, you may wish to change rollers at this point. Many people find the stock rollers to be far too heavy, and have better performance with something in the 7.5g range. If you are adding a performance exhaust system like the Gianelli NRX, then use the roller weights they have provided. To get roller weights, check out the ApriliaForum store.

After the washer has been removed, re-assemble the variator onto the crank shaft. Make sure the starter gear behind the variator is on the spline, and make sure the variator is all the way pushed to the back before tightening the bolt. The bolt must be impacted on, and be sure to use some Loc-Tite (use the Blue version, it is removable) on the bolt before tightening the nut. It will have a tendency to spin off, so LOCTITE IT!!!
OK, that is it for the variator / washer restriction!

    Jet Restriction in the Carburetor

Now, lets go to the carburetor. Here, the main jet is a bit too small, and should be changed. I am not sure what the stock jet size is, but it is small. Get yourself a larger main jet. I went with the .8mm jet, with shipping it was about ten bucks. Give AF1 Racing a call or email to find a new jet for your scooter.

The first step is removing the carb. You have to disconnect all the cables and hoses. Be careful when doing this, work in a clean enviroment. A little bit of dirt in the carb is a bad thing! Keep needles from the choke and throttle from touching anything. When the gas line is removed, stick a screw in it to keep gas from leaking.

This is how you take off the choke.

Once everthing has been disconnected, remove these screws to take off the carb.

The carb is going to be filled with gas, so be careful! No smoking, dummy! Lay a paper towel down and flip the carb over. Remove the two screws on the bottom and take off the bottom cover.

Use a clean flat-head screw driver to remove the jet. Simply screw in the new larger jet in its place and re-assemble carb. Bolt the carb back on and re-attach all the cables and hoses. When putting the throttle cable back in there is a channel and a key that has to line up. Turn it until it lines up and falls in all the way.
Now you can reassemble in the order you disassembled, and we can move on to the exhaust system.

Two Restrictions on the Exhaust System

There are actually 2 separate restrictions on the exhaust. I will be honest, it is a pain in the butt to do this. There is a lot of grinding and cutting involved. My honest opinion is don’t bother, buy a performance exhaust! It is well worth the money, saves you some time and the performance exhaust will give you even better performance. But for those of you on a tight budget, I went ahead and de-restricted mine just so I could take pics to show you how to do it. Make sure you read this entire section before beginning this project, just to make sure you want to get into it.

If you choose the route of a performance exhaust, go with something like the Leo Vinci ZX, or the Gianelli NRX, both of which are fine pipes. There are also some nice offerings by Arrow and Top Performances. Check out the ApriliaForum store for pipes for your Aprilia scooter.

Start by removing your exhaust. Two bolts hold it to the engine, and three bolts hold it to the side of the frame. Remove them all, and carefully remove the exhaust. You will notice a flange with three bolts and a little pipe that comes off the side of the main pipe and just comes to an end. We need to grind the bolts off to get to an inner flange, and we have to cut off the little pipe that extends to the side.

Once you have ground off the bolt heads, you will be able to see the restrictor. You will notice a large pipe comming through the flange, but there is a smaller pipe welded inside it. You now have to cut off the small pipe behind the weld. Use a file to smooth out the burrs. Make sure you clean out all the chips before re-assembling with new bolts.

Now that little pipe that has to be cut off. The proper way to do this is to cut it off and re-weld it shut. But if you are like me and welderless, I just left enough pipe to crimp and fold it over. I put the end I cut off into my vise and closed it until the pipe came together. After that I took a pair of vise grips and bent the fold in half. Then I beat it with a hammer until it was completely closed. After that I took a grinder and smoothed it over. I guess some JB weld or some exhaust tape might work also. However you do it, it is important that there not be any leaks here, or your performance will suffer!

Now you need to re-assemble the exhaust. You are going to need some new bolts to replace the ones you cut off. I was able to buy the same thread bolts and put them through the nuts that were left welded to the other side of the flange. But if the nuts are messed up on the bolts from the weld, then you will need to grind the nuts off and use new nuts and bolts. Use some high temp black paint to paint over all those unsightly grinding marks you made! But it should look like this when you are done.
OK, all you have to do now is re-attach the exhaust to your scooter. Be sure to get the gasket between the pipe and the head back in its place. If the gasket isn’t very pristine looking, order another from your dealer and replace it. You don’t want any leaks there.

And that is it for de-restricting! Enjoy your scooter’s new found performance! Again, for parts, I highly recommend AF1 Racing who runs the ApriliaForum store for all your Aprilia needs. If you have a non-Aprilia scooter, give AF1 a call, as they will likely be able to help you out anyway! And of course, if you want to ask questions or just chat about Aprilias, the ApriliaForum is a great place to go.

Tony yes it will increase youre pefromance. Thanks alot to the writer of this post it rules and will help me alot. But how come there is no mention of throttle deristricting here or do aprilias not need them .

    4. on 27 Nov 2003 at 3:14 pm sam

Doing just the exhaust mods will increase performance, but it helps to do the entire derestriction at once. With just the exhaust mods, your scooter will run slightly lean, which isn’t a big deal, but it gives you the opportunity for more performance by increasing your jet size a bit.

We didn’t mention throttle derestriction, because I wasn’t aware of any modern scooters that have restrictions in the throttle system. I’m not even 100% sure what they would be. I know the BMW F650 has two places for you to install the throttle cable, and one is ‘restricted’ because it only has half the throw, you can’t ever open it all the way, because of where the cable is mounted. I don’t know of any scooters that have that type of restriction.

Question: How many miles do I have to put on my Mojito before I derestrict it?
Also, if I just do an exhaust modification will I get better performance with a new Leo Vince pipe or doing the modification to the original exchaust pipe?

      Ron

    6. on 21 Dec 2003 at 9:29 pm scootnfast

First and foremost, kudos to Sam!!! Great job with the site man! Love what you did with the info and pics!

Next for Ron… You will get better performance out of a “high performance” pipe than you will with a de-restricted stock pipe. It will not be substantial, but it will make a differance. 2-stroke pipes are a science when it comes to making them. Thge length of the pipe, diameter of the chamber, the length of the chamber all have great effects on the performance curves. Stock pipes aren’t designed to give you great performance. That is why “high performance” pipes are called just that, they WILL give you higher performance. It also greatly depends on other modifications that are done. Example, an all stock scooter(de-restricted) with a derestricted exhaust will not show much of an increase in performance by going to a high performance pipe. But a modified scooter with big bore kit, bigger carb, clutch, variator, reeds, etc… will show a much larger increase in power in going from a stock pipe to a high performance pipe.

      Hi,

I owe a Piaggio X9 Amalfi, 180 c.c.. Can I restrict my scoot? I was told that Piaggio scoots are not restrcted. Is this true? If the X9 scoot can be restricted, how can it be done? Is it the same technique as you stated here?

      Thanks in advance.

Just derestricted my piaggio zip 50 using your advice. (deres the variator only). it added almost 10mph on the max speed (once its warmed up). Your advice and instructions are friggin ace. That feeling when it shot past its old top speed for the first time was great, a real rush. But I wouldnt want it to go any faster, it would feel too unstable.

    32. on 21 Jun 2004 at 12:21 pm Monkey

Cool site dudes cheers, The dead-spot on the SR50 is mainly caused by 1 of a few things,

it can be an old throttle cable which needs to be replaced (mainly on modles that are 2 or 3 years old),

The spark-plug type and gap size, THE ABSOLUTE BEST SPARK-PLUG 2 USE is an NGK 9 (yes 9) or equivalant (a 2mm gap works very well).

Finally the petrol, using super unleaded gives you less smoke, better reliability, great performance AND better gas mileage. ESPECIALLY WITH THE OLDER ENGINES (1999 – 2001)
My SR50 on a full tank of regular unleaded would do 80miles 50mph (yes i did test it) but on a full tank of super unleaded it did 105miles 50mph.
i have never gone back 2 the regular stuff and my bike is absolutely fantastic on gas.
I hope this helped a few of ya.

Exhausts don’t make a damm bit of difference, its a load of rubbish to make you spend ya money, I own an Aprilia SR50 i clocked it at 70MPH on a flat road, i suggest getting a 7mm main jet and 5 gram roller-weights (both of which can be baught at more or less any scooter shop) roller-weights cost about £12 and a main jet costs about £10,
if you really wanna make a differace to ya scooter, use a higher number spark-plug (cooler) and use super unleaded, don’t use that “shell optimax” stuff it’s rubbish and doesn’t make much differance.

i think yall need to remember that scooters are only ment to plodd arount towns @ 35mph no fly around at break-neck speeds. if yall wanna go fast, buy a propper bike.

    42. on 10 Jul 2004 at 5:35 pm Alan Ainslie

My son has ann RS 50 purchased with the resrictions removed. I need to REPLACE the restrictions to get the bike legal for him in the UK as he is only 16. Anyone able to help me please.

      many thanks

      Alan.

    43. on 11 Jul 2004 at 4:03 pm sam

Mike – Scooters are meant to do whatever I want them to do! I like it when they go fast, but still weigh less and are easier to work on than a ‘proper’ bike.

Alan – You may not be able to fully reinstall the restrictions. Your best bet would be to put a stock pipe on it (you can probably find one for sale from someone who has replaced their stock pipe and doesn’t need it any more), and leave it be. That should bring it into legal limits.

‘Bloke’ – Ok, so you don’t know much about scooters, thats OK. Pipes do make a difference, if you are getting a good pipe, and you set up the rest of the transmission and engine. Unless you’ve done SERIOUS modification to your SR, you probably didn’t hit a real 70mph on flat road. Remember your speedo is over 10mph off at that kind of speed. Using the right gas won’t make you go faster. Higher octane just means a higher combustion temperature. Use the right octane for your scooter (usually 91 in the US, and 95 by the RON method in the UK). It won’t give you more power, but your engine will run better.

    44. on 12 Jul 2004 at 4:26 pm The Bloke

sam when i say i was doing 70mph, i ment thats what the police officer that pulled me over said i was doing, fortunatly he let me off with a caution cos the speed limit on that road was 60mph. yes i agree that a higher octaine produces higher engine temperatures but this can be balenced out with a cooler burning plug, if u get these two factors right then you can make yourself a pretty dam efficient engine.

    45. on 12 Jul 2004 at 4:40 pm dean

i tryed one of them leo thingy exhausts and it dint make much differance, in fact it sucked so i took it back. everyone out there DON’T BUY ONE!!

    46. on 13 Jul 2004 at 6:04 am Jason

why are aprilia parts so expensive, dont thoses italians know what to charge?!!
they all seem to forget that more of the people that ride scooters are young or students. who on earth is going to pay £100 for a crapy plastic fairing? The Japs are much more realistic whn it comes to prices.

      I Need Help!
Got new Piaggio Zip 50 Cat, got the restrictor on the variator removed, now when i give it full throttle it chokes and slows down til i ease off!
Is it running lean or rich?
Would fitting a K&N Air filter help or getting a bigger Jet?
      Any help would be great!
      Many thanks

    53. on 28 Jul 2004 at 4:50 pm Richard

No need for all that stuff just change your roller-weights to 5gram and slap a bigger main jet in it (.7mm) also you’ll find that it’ll get quicker onces it’s got more miles on the clock.

    54. on 28 Jul 2004 at 4:52 pm dean

60! ah hahahahaha you bought a mellon.

    55. on 06 Aug 2004 at 5:10 am HGA

I got a 2002 sr 50 replica. the exhaust has been de-restricted and it goes about 58 mph on the flat, but acceleration isn’t so good. would a bigger jet and lighter rollers make much of a difference, if so where can you buy bigger jets online in england?

    56. on 06 Aug 2004 at 3:43 pm jaqinda

noway! never get lighter rollers otherwise ur bike will rev out of its power band. the stock exhaust is the reason 4 your bad exceleration.
also use fully synthetic 2stroke oil (but dont mix it with the normal stuff)
It’ll give less friction in the piston movement and make your engine feel more responsive.
try 5,5 gram or 6 gram rollers, i use those and my sr (2001) does 68mph max on a flat road.
the heavy rollers also give me more power up-hill cos i get more torque.

hey…this websites gr8, gave me alot of ideas and understanding on what 2 do with my ped which is a Peugeot speedfight 2, only problem was that all it has is a restricter pipe on the exhaust which i cut off and crimped, this gave it abit more grunt but only increased the top speed by about 5mph as it now reaches about 38mph. there was nothing that i could find in the gearbox eventhough i had the variater off and stared at it for ages to find a restricter washer….seems to not exist on my moped. I would b greatfull if sum1 has any ideas about wot i could do 2 get about 45mph out of this bike, many thanxs Tom…UK

Hi. Brilliant Site. Pictures Are Loverly And Clear.

This Is A Seperate Questoin Now:

I’m 19yr Old and about to take my CBT test. I went to the test centre (RSJ) to ask them a question… Am i able to de-restrict my scooter and ride on L plates after passing a normal CBT.

Answer i got was ‘Yes, although your scooter will now have to be insured as a motorbike but it shouldnt change anything’.

      My questoin to you is:

is this information correct? my friend told me that the DVLA would disagree with the answer i was given. Is my friend not understanding the law properly?

I know that when your 17 or over your profisional licence allows motorbikes upto 125cc, surely this means i can ride my scooter on L-plates de-restricted, all i have to do is confirm its been modified to DVLA. Is this right? More info please from someone who is surtain of the law.

      Best regards
      michael.

Hey, for those of you who are scooter derestriction experts, I have had a Malaguti Phantom F-12 for about a year now and am considering some mods and de-restriction is where i would like to start…my question is if I follow your manual on this site should i look out for anything unusual with the F-12? And what do you personally recommend for modifications..i was thinking at least a Gianelli exhaust.

      Hi.

I have a problem with my lights on my Scooter. When I turn the ignition switch on but don’t turn the engine on, my lights should still go on shouldn’t they.

But when I do this my lights don’t come on at all. Only my indicators and break light comes on. Also, when I turn the engine on the front lights do come on, but they are very dimm, the only time they get brighter is when I rev the engine up. This isn’t right?

I’m guessing its something to do with the “Alternator” or the “Rectifier”. If anyone has had this problem or knows how I can fix it please respond asap or alternatively. Email me, Mike@YoBo.me.uk.

      Regards

I own a Gilera DNA (2001) which I bought second hand, and it goes 38mph on straights, so obviously something has been done to it. Im having it de-restrcited as soon as I am 17, one of my local scooter stores is doing it for £45 which is quite reasonable.

Just wondering wether just cutting the blind pipe will increase the top speed, as i cant wait to go faster.

      Thanks

Me and my friends always try and go up this really steep hill when we ride, but one guy with a piaggio zip 50 just derestricted through the exhaust gets to 40mph and another guy with a honda with sports pipe and carb and stuff (70mph)always die out and end up walking it up whilst i cruise at 35 on my peugeot vivacity (50mph), also only derestricted through the exhaust, but i can understand the zip not making it but the honda is way faster then me with similar wheel size and gearing, so why do they always die out, i thought it might be because they are both at alot higher rpm and have very little low end power, also how much faster will removing the variator restrctor make me go?

Heres a thought for you all, get a life and stop making piss peddlers go 65mph, get a proper bike. And if you insist on modifying your scooter, unless you are a mechanic, dont attempt it yourself because reading some of the comments posted on here, most of you dont know what the hell your on about (apart from the author)

    114. on 17 Nov 2004 at 5:37 pm mark

hi ive been lookin for ages for this kinda information ur site is the only site out there tht ofers pictures i am an aprentice mechanic so doin all this stuff was reletivley easy jst thoght id let u no tht i found another restrictor on my dna 50 theres a colar in the float chamber remove this and u can achieve full throttle

a note to the person thats on about “stop making piss peddlers go 65mph, get a proper bike” has he failed to realise that the reason we are modifying 50’s is because most of us r 16 and connot get somethin decent like an r1

Yo, this site is top, and all the derestriction methods he stated do work.
For the people who bought a performance exhaust and said they lost performance etc, are you sure you removed the cone restrictor from the end?(part that connects to the engine, if you havent that’ll be the reason for the bad performance all through the range…i had a Leo Vince ZX and i removed the restrictor and i was flying

    121. on 02 Dec 2004 at 2:17 pm Darren

Hey guys, Firstly…...Very nice work on the info, ive looked for months for this much detail and never found it until now, i understand most of what you are saying but could i just ask if anyne knows if these methods would be the same with a sym red devil 50….the most ive had out of it is 40 flat/45 down hill and about 25 up hill…...im sick of cars riding up my arse and then overtaking me so i wanted to take some of the restrictions out…..
Also, i’m looking into buying an Aprilia RS 125 Race Replica after christmas…....can anyone give me their opinions on this bike or what is the best 125 out there??
Thanks in advance guys, i appreciate it millions

I found out from a mate that did that jet thing it makes the ped drink petarol a lot faster i have a yamaha jog rr this has variator removed and getting the pipe on exhaust removed soon as im 17 it goes about 43mph on flat and better on petrol i reccomend not doing the jet thing also its obviouse to police if you doing more than 40mph so at 16 i reccomend just doing the washer thing.

yo ppl i am 16 in about 3 weeks and i just bought an aprilia sr 50 replica! i go out on it every now and then at about midnight. i got 50 to 55mph out of it. I am thinking about doing some of the de-restrictions posted here, as i want to be one of the fastest in my area.

Does the information above work on the Aprilia sr50 replica version?

If i bought a race pipe would it do the same job as the cutting and crimping of the standard exhaust as i dont want to cut it?which ones do you recommend?

If i just took out the washer would it work and how fast roughly? as i dont feel confident on doing the other stuff!
cheers people email me asap on King_eddie69@hotmail.com

If i just put a new exhaust on a Sr50 R L/c will this mean it is derestrict well i want it to go around 50 mark. Is the main restrictor in the exhaust? if i remove exhaust and replace what speed will it reach, without touching rest of bike. thx Jw

Hey, i have a peuguot speedfight 2, i have cut of the side pipe of my exhaust and crimped it together. I open up the variator and stuff to remove the washer but there was no sign of a washer at all. Since i have done the alteration to the exhaust the speed has increased by 5 mph and the top speed is now 35mph! I really want it to go about 45mhp.

Can anyone help me? email: Funker1234@aol.com

      Thanks JAke

hi, this is a great site, but i am having trouble getting my variator off, i have tried impact wrench but still it just spins around with the belt, is there something i can use as a locking tool to stop it from turnin wilst i unscrew the bolt, my scooter is a peugeot speedfight 2 if any1 has any info for me or a website please reply to this, also my email is azz_maher_05@hotmail.co.uk please help its well too slow :( need get new rollers on it

aaron – try an oil filter wrench, it’ll grip the variator whilst it’s handle rests up against the clutch assembly…

Hey I got my Yamaha Jog R last year. I bought it second hand and the restrictors been taken off. My bike goes around 60/80 KM/H on flat ground and about 90 KM/H downhill. I was wondering how I could give it a bit more topseed without spending too much money. Is there any point of taking off the restrictor(s) off the excaust? How? Or maybe I could replace it with a race excaust? Thanks for reading.

hi does anyone know how to derestrict a suzuki katana ay50 i have just brought one and am 16 in about a month i am fully aware of the consequences of getting it derestricted but in all fairness as long as you arnt on 50mph or high roads doing that your not likely to get pulled up cops have better things to be doing but my ay50 only does 28mph and i find it very dangorous driving on my local main road with a 40mph speed limet and i cant realy avoid it going around and i think it would be way to dangourous to be driving at just 28mph on this im not wanting to go stupidly fast just 40mph would do me fine so i can keep up with traffic could any1 let me know how to derestrict one or a link on how to derestrict this many thanks luke.

      problems with the injectors etc…
is there an easy fix or is the bike destined for parts… just had

i have a piaggio zip 50 and am having problems with the drive. Scenario: Riding along at whatever speed and slow down (quickly or slowly) to a stop at traffic lights (for example). When pulling away the engine doesn’t rev and i have very little or no drive. This lasts for 3-5 seconds and then the engine sound changes and the scooter drives away as normal. When it gets going all is fine until i stop again and try to pull away. Uphill is worse than flat. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

      thanks Chris

    170. on 24 Feb 2007 at 6:44 pm Mat

chris. did you not read the whole bit about an impact wrench? also you could use a tool which you can open bolts with and you can make the size big and small by opening the tool and putting the handle in a different channel. dunno what ist called but if you use one to hold the variator while with your othe hand undo the bolt that should do it. the tool is like a big pair of pliers. if you google channel lock you will see what i mean. you will probably have one unless you live in a diy nightmare of a house :) hope it helped.

      hey, i own a piaggio ape 50.
i’ve had a big bore kit from 50cc to 120cc, 125cc jets put into the carb, and an upgrade gearbox. it’ll now accellerate ok up till about 25mph, but then there’s a dead spot from 25mph, to 35mph. flat out i’ve cruised on dual carriageway at 58mph. what kind of exhaust would you reccommend to boost the accelleration?

      thanks, ben

    178. on 29 Mar 2007 at 4:01 pm Az

if ur havin trouble going up hills but ur running fine on the straights then u probly need a new belt!!! they go shiny after a while and lose grip depending on the age of the bike, also if ur havin to keep blippin the throttle to hold ur revs up then its probly ur belt slipping aswell!

I got my wife a verucchi avispa 50cc. She got the scooter fever from a girl at work..I am pretty sure she will like it enough to get permit for a 150 cc down the road…I would rather not put alot into it, so what would help with the acceleration. I figure it has a washer like was described..Is that what really affects the acceleration..Top speed is not an issue as all the roads around town and to hher work are 35 mph..Thanks….kid
